The Sacramento Kings hit a new low in their disappointing season, blowing a double-digit lead to lose to the Detroit Pistons. This loss capped off a disastrous 0-5 homestand and prompted head coach Mike Brown to publicly call out his players, particularly star point guard De’Aaron Fox.

The Kings dominated for most of the game but allowed the Pistons to mount a comeback in the fourth quarter. The final blow came when Fox committed a costly foul on Jaden Ivey’s three-point attempt, resulting in a four-point play that sealed the win for Detroit.

This loss feels different from previous setbacks this season. The team’s inability to close out games they should win is becoming a disturbing trend. The Kings have now lost 11 of 14 games decided by five points or fewer, a stark contrast to their clutch performance last season.

Brown’s postgame comments were uncharacteristically pointed. He expressed frustration with the team’s lack of attention to detail and failure to execute the game plan in crucial moments. The coach emphasized that players were explicitly instructed not to allow three-point attempts in the final seconds, making Fox’s foul even more perplexing.

Fox’s postgame comments were equally concerning. When asked about the final play, he dismissively stated that his explanation “doesn’t really matter” and wouldn’t make anyone feel better. This response raises questions about Fox’s leadership and accountability in difficult moments.

The Roster Dilemma

The Kings’ struggles go beyond just one game or player. There’s a growing sense that this roster, despite its talent, may have fundamental flaws. The lack of defensive-minded wings and forwards continues to be a glaring weakness, as it has been for years.

More worryingly, there seems to be a leadership vacuum on the court. While Fox is undoubtedly talented, his quiet demeanor and lead-by-example approach may not be enough to galvanize the team during tough stretches. The absence of a vocal, Draymond Green-type presence is becoming increasingly apparent.

For the first time, there’s serious discussion about whether the Kings should consider trading Fox. While it would be a drastic move, it might be necessary if the team hopes to take the next step toward contention. The challenge lies in finding a trade partner and package that would provide equal value for a player of Fox’s caliber.
