The Big Picture
The Charlotte Hornets’ offense struggled once again as they lost to the Orlando Magic 95-84, despite LaMelo Ball’s incredible 44-point performance. With injuries piling up and turnovers mounting, the Hornets are searching for answers.
My Take
LaMelo is operating at an elite level, showing why he’s the cornerstone of this franchise. But this team is relying too heavily on him. He’s the league leader in 30 point games. He’s top 3 in scoring. He’s the 1st player in franchise history to score 35+ in 3 straight. He’s the 5th to score 40+ in back-to-back games. But the Hornets lost again because the lack of support was glaring last night. Injuries have limited or taken away the Hornets 3rd, 4th and 5th options on offense and the 2nd option, Brandon Miller, is struggling to create off the dribble against tight defense.
The turnover situation—27 total, the most in the league this season—is not just about sloppiness. It’s a reflection of the roster’s current state. Players like Brandon Miller are being asked to do too much, too soon. The Hornets haven’t been able to run functional pick and roll offense because the have exactly 0 centers who have NBA size and skills on offense.
Key Stats
• LaMelo Ball: 44 points on 17-of-30 shooting, 8 FT attempts.
• Brandon Miller: 20 points but struggled with turnovers.
• Starters outside Ball and Miller: 5 combined points.
• Orlando’s defense forced 27 Hornets turnovers.
Injury Report
Reinforcements could be coming. Mark Williams and Nick Richards are on rehab assignments with the Greensboro Swarm, but it may take time before they’re at full strength. Until then, the Hornets remain thin in the frontcourt.
One Final Thought
This is a tough stretch, but LaMelo’s play is giving fans something to hold onto. If he continues this pace, he might force the league—and the refs—to take notice.
