The Atlanta Hawks suffered their first loss of the 2024-25 season on Sunday evening. It came as substantial underdogs against the Oklahoma City Thunder on the road, though the Hawks did compete impressively for more than three quarters.

Zaccharie Risacher’s Impressive Play

One of the standout performances came from Risacher, who delivered a solid game with 13 points, six rebounds, two assists, a steal, and a block. His defensive prowess, especially in the first half, was noteworthy. Risacher’s ability to read the game belies his rookie status, showcasing a maturity on the court that is rare for someone so early in their career. While he still has room for improvement, his efficiency and rebounding were encouraging signs for the Hawks.

Dyson Daniels, on the other hand, had a mixed outing. Defensively, he was strong, but his offensive game showed some vulnerabilities. Missing his first four three-point attempts seemed to shake his offensive assertiveness slightly, though he remained a valuable asset with his cutting and passing abilities. It’s clear that Daniels is still developing as an offensive player, and while there are concerns, his defensive contributions remain significant.

Trae Young’s Performance and Team Dynamics

Trae Young’s performance was a mixed bag. Scoring 24 points and providing eight assists, Young was effective for most of the game. However, his 10 turnovers were a point of concern, particularly in the fourth quarter when he ran into Cason Wallace. It’s important to note that high turnover rates are common among top players, but 10 is a number that is hard to ignore. The Hawks’ current lack of a secondary ball handler exacerbates this issue, making it a challenge to manage turnovers effectively.

The team is also dealing with injuries, which complicates their strategy. The absence of Kobe Bufkin, who was expected to fill a crucial role, has left a gap in their lineup, and that is magnified without both Bogdan Bogdanovic and De’Andre Hunter. While fans are eager for a transaction to bring in another ball handler, such moves are not easily executed, especially early in the season.

Looking ahead, the Hawks are preparing for their first back-to-back of the season against the Washington Wizards on Monday. Despite the Wizards’ struggles, nothing is guaranteed in the NBA.
