The Cleveland Cavaliers secured a 124-113 victory over the Utah Jazz on Monday night, showcasing their resilience and depth in a game that was closer than expected. While it may not have been the prettiest win, it provided valuable experience in late-game execution for a team that has often dominated opponents this season.

This matchup marked only the fourth game in December featuring “clutch time” for the Cavs - defined as a game within five points in the final five minutes of regulation. Despite leading by as many as 17 points in the second half, Utah’s persistent effort forced Cleveland to execute down the stretch.

The Cavs closed the game with a lineup featuring Darius Garland, Donovan Mitchell, Caris LeVert, Georges Niang, and Evan Mobley at center. This configuration, with Mobley anchoring the defense, has proven to be one of Cleveland’s most effective late-game units. The decision to sit Jarrett Allen in favor of this smaller, more versatile group paid dividends as the Cavs pulled away in the final minutes.

Sam Merrill Breaks Out of Slump

A significant bright spot in the win was Sam Merrill’s breakout performance. After struggling with his shot since returning from an ankle injury, Merrill exploded for 20 points on 6-of-11 shooting from beyond the arc. This outburst couldn’t have come at a better time, as Merrill’s ability to space the floor is crucial to the Cavs’ offensive success.

Merrill’s shooting prowess adds another dimension to Cleveland’s already potent offense. Even when he’s not making shots, defenses must respect his gravity, opening up opportunities for his teammates. This performance should boost Merrill’s confidence and remind opponents of the danger he poses from long range.

Darius Garland continued his stellar play, leading the team with 23 points and 8 assists. His ability to break down defenders, particularly when matched up against bigger players like Walker Kessler, was on full display. Garland’s growth as a playmaker and decision-maker has been evident throughout the season, solidifying his case for All-Star consideration.

Evan Mobley also shined, contributing on both ends of the floor with 20 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 blocks. His improved three-point shooting, going 3-for-5 from deep, adds yet another weapon to the Cavs’ arsenal.
