The Atlanta Hawks are navigating a challenging situation following the announcement of Kobe Bufkin’s season-ending surgery and Onyeka Okongwu’s multi-game absence with a knee issue. These developments have significant implications for the team’s roster and future plans.

Bufkin, a mid-first-round draft pick, was seen as a promising talent with his big point guard skill set and defensive capabilities. His ability to create shots for himself and others made him an intriguing prospect for the Hawks. However, this injury setback puts a temporary halt to his development and, potentially, the team’s investment in him.

In response to Bufkin’s absence, the Hawks are exploring various options to fill the gap. Vit Krejci has been stepping up as the backup point guard, although he’s generally considered more effective in a wing role. Dyson Daniels has also seen some minutes at the point, particularly when Trae Young was unavailable.

The Hawks’ two-way guard, Keaton Wallace, who previously filled in during a spate of injuries, could potentially see more playing time. However, the team’s decision not to immediately recall him from the G League suggests they might be considering other alternatives.

Roster Moves and Trade Possibilities

The Hawks also waived two-way wing Seth Lundy this week. This decision opens up a two-way slot, potentially for second-round pick Nikola Djurisic or other G League prospects like Kevon Harris and Daeqwon Plowden.

With the unofficial start of the NBA trade season on December 15th, the Hawks now have more flexibility in potential trades. Players like Cody Zeller, Larry Nance, and Clint Capela could be involved in trade discussions, although Capela’s strong performance this season makes him less likely to be moved.

The Hawks possess some trade assets, including draft picks and young talent, that could be used to acquire additional help. However, any moves will need to be carefully considered given the team’s current success and salary cap constraints.

As the Hawks continue to navigate these challenges, they’ll need to balance short-term needs with long-term goals. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining how the team addresses these roster issues and positions itself for the remainder of the season.
