Timberwolves Trade Deadline Primer: Assets, Limitations, and Potential Moves

The NBA Trade Deadline is fast approaching, set for next Thursday, February 6th at 2 PM.

As a team over the second apron, the Minnesota Timberwolves face significant restrictions in their ability to make moves. They can’t aggregate contracts, send cash, or take back more money than they send out. These limitations make it challenging for the Wolves to execute trades.

Despite these constraints, there are still potential moves to consider. Julius Randle’s name has been floated in trade discussions, but finding a suitable partner is complicated by his $33 million salary this season and $30.9 million player option for next year. The Wolves’ improved offensive performance since the start of the year and their likely top-five seed in the West make a Randle trade less probable.

Another possibility is a smaller move involving young players like Leonard Miller or Josh Minott, paired with a future second-round pick, for a veteran depth piece. Chicago’s Torrey Craig was mentioned recently by ESPN’s Bobby Marks as a potential target, which could address wing depth concerns, especially with Donte DiVincenzo’s injury — although Craig himself is currently injured.

How Many Draft Picks do the Timberwolves Own?

In terms of draft assets, the Timberwolves’ situation is better than many might expect.

They have a top-13 protected first-round pick from Detroit that could convey this year, as well as Utah’s second-round pick, which is likely to be in the top 35. The Wolves also own their first-round picks in 2026, 2028, and 2030.

Given the current landscape, it’s more likely that the Timberwolves will be active in the buyout market or waiver wire rather than making a significant trade. The team’s recent success and the complexities of the trade market make standing pat a reasonable option.
