The Dallas Mavericks might be looking to shake things up as the trade deadline approaches. Recent reports suggest that center Daniel Gafford could be on the trading block, with the team potentially seeking to upgrade their perimeter defense.

According to Christian Clark of The Athletic, the Mavericks have expressed interest in acquiring an impact perimeter defender and have dangled Gafford in those discussions. However, Marc Stein of the Stein Line reports that it would be a misnomer to suggest Dallas is actively shopping Gafford.

The conflicting reports highlight the delicate balance the Mavericks are trying to strike. Gafford, who arrived in Dallas at last year’s trade deadline, has been a solid contributor. His reasonable contract ($13.3 million this year, $14.3 million next) makes him an attractive trade piece.

However, the Mavericks shouldn’t be too hasty in moving Gafford. The team finally has two solid centers in Gafford and Dereck Lively II, addressing a long-standing need. Trading Gafford would only make sense for a significant upgrade, such as New Orleans Pelicans’ defensive specialist Herb Jones.

Jones, known for his elite perimeter defense, would be a game-changer for the Mavericks. However, the Pelicans have been reluctant to entertain trade offers for him.

The Mavericks’ interest in bolstering their perimeter defense is understandable. While the team boasts the NBA’s best starting lineup (Luka Doncic, Kyrie Irving, Klay Thompson, P.J. Washington, and Dereck Lively II) with a +25.6 net rating, injuries have limited this group to just 14 games and 119 minutes together.

Despite the injuries, the Mavericks have shown resilience. They’re 10-10 without Doncic this season, a marked improvement from previous years. This speaks to the team’s improved depth, arguably the best supporting cast of the Doncic era.

As the trade deadline approaches, the Mavericks face a crucial decision. Should they stand pat with their current roster, hoping for better health and more time for their best lineups to gel? Or should they make a bold move to address their perimeter defense, potentially at the cost of their newfound frontcourt depth?
