We’ve spent a lot of time in this space talking about the Knicks’ inability to hit the peak last year’s group did in January. It took until the dying embers of the month, but they arrived just in time.

In a thrilling 122-112 win, the Knicks showcased their ability to compete with the best, outplaying the defending champions on both ends of the court.

Jalen Brunson put on a masterclass, the best player on the floor with the best player in the world and it wasn’t particularly close.

With 30 points and 15 assists, Brunson had essentially a perfect offensive game guiding the Knicks to a torrid start where they had 16 assists before their first turnover.

When the Nuggets punched back and threatened to pull away in the third, Brunson went volcanic torching every unlucky defender Denver put in his path scoring 18 points in the quarter. Come the fourth Denver was tired of it and consistently sent an extra defender so the captain casually switched gears and piled up seven assists as the Knicks pulled away late.

The Knicks’ Supporting Cast Steps Up

While Brunson was the headliner, the supporting cast played a crucial role in securing the win. OG Anunoby continued his three-game rebound, contributing 23 points on efficient shooting, including a scorching 5-of-7 from beyond the arc including one to break a 15-3 Denver run. His defensive presence was equally important, with two steals coming in quick succession as the Knicks answered with a 9-2 run of their own. He also continues to pressure the rim with three dunks in the first six minutes of the game.

Josh Hart and Mikal Bridges (despite a down shooting night) also made significant contributions, combining for solid offensive output and tenacious defense. Their energy and versatility allowed the Knicks to maintain intensity even when the starters needed rest.

A Team on the Rise

This victory over the Nuggets isn’t just another win; it’s a statement. Much like last January it wasn’t that they won it was how they won. This felt like a Conference Finals game where when faced with adversity, like the Nuggets’ third-quarter surge, the Knicks didn’t fold. Instead, they responded with poise and determination, a quality that will serve them well as they head into the latter part of the season and, potentially, the playoffs.
