The Cleveland Cavaliers are exercising caution with Max Strus’ return to the court. Despite earlier reports suggesting he might play against the Washington Wizards, Strus has yet to make his season debut. This decision isn’t cause for alarm; rather, it’s a testament to the team’s long-term vision.
As the Cavs sit atop the league with a 22-4 record, there’s no rush to bring Strus back before he’s fully ready. Coach Kenny Atkinson emphasized the importance of a gradual return, stating, “Max is progressing. He had two great days of practice. We want to make sure there’s no setbacks.”
This conservative approach makes sense, especially considering the strong performances from Caris LeVert and Isaac Okoro in Strus’ absence. The team’s success allows for a more measured rehabilitation process, ensuring Strus returns at full strength.
Wing Players Stepping Up
While Strus works his way back, Isaac Okoro has been lighting it up from beyond the arc. Shooting an impressive 48% from three-point range, Okoro is forcing defenses to respect his shot. This improvement, combined with his already stellar defensive skills, has expanded his role within the offense.
Okoro’s growth is evident in his increased involvement in screen-setting and decision-making in the short roll. His ability to make winning plays, as demonstrated in the crucial game against Boston, has been a significant factor in the Cavs’ success this season.
Caris LeVert is also having a career year in terms of efficiency. Shooting 52.5% from the field and 46% from three, LeVert has embraced Coach Atkinson’s system, taking more efficient shots and improving his shot selection. His effective field goal percentage of 63% is a massive jump from his previous career high of 52.5%.
The stellar play of Okoro and LeVert has not only contributed to the Cavs’ impressive record but also allows the team to be patient with Strus’ return. This depth and flexibility bode well for Cleveland’s long-term prospects this season.
