The New Orleans Pelicans’ recent 113-104 loss to the Toronto Raptors has left fans and analysts with mixed emotions. On one hand, the defeat aids the team’s potential tanking efforts for a high draft pick. On the other, it raises concerns about the squad’s competitiveness and growth.

Zion Williamson’s performance was a bright spot, as he dominated with 31 points on efficient 13-of-18 shooting. However, his impressive stat line was overshadowed by the team’s overall struggles, particularly on offense.

The Pelicans’ shot selection was questionable, with a heavy reliance on mid-range jumpers. This approach proved ineffective, as the team shot just 15-for-35 from that area while drawing only two shooting fouls. In contrast, Toronto took a more modern approach, attacking the rim and spreading the floor with three-pointers.

Offensive Stagnation

New Orleans’ offense often became stagnant, with limited ball movement and a tendency to go away from Williamson in crucial moments. This resulted in an offensive rating of 101, significantly below their season average of 109.

The team’s inability to capitalize on Zion’s hot hand is particularly concerning. Despite his efficiency, there were stretches where he barely touched the ball, raising questions about the team’s offensive strategy and decision-making.

Defensive Lapses

Defensively, the Pelicans struggled to contain Toronto’s attack, losing the points in the paint battle and allowing 23 second-chance points. This highlights ongoing issues with rebounding and interior defense that have plagued the team throughout the season.

As the Pelicans navigate the remainder of the season, they face a crucial dilemma: embrace the tank for a high draft pick or focus on building cohesion and competitiveness for the future. The outcome of this decision could shape the franchise’s trajectory for years to come.
