The Dallas Mavericks found their rhythm in a dominant victory over the Washington Wizards, with Klay Thompson leading the charge in a spectacular first-quarter performance. Thompson, who had been struggling to find his shot in recent games, exploded for seven three-pointers in the opening frame, outscoring the entire Wizards team.

This outburst came as a welcome sight for Mavericks fans, who had been questioning Thompson’s role and effectiveness in the offense. In the previous two games, Thompson had only received 38 touches total in 56 minutes of play The coaching staff clearly made it a point of emphasis to get Thompson involved early and often against the Wizards.

The strategy paid off in spades, as Thompson’s hot shooting opened up the floor for his teammates. His gravity drew defenders away from other players, creating driving lanes and opportunities for easy baskets. This is exactly the kind of impact the Mavericks were hoping for when they acquired Thompson, and it’s a reminder of how dangerous he can be when he gets into a rhythm.

While it’s important to note that this performance came against the struggling Wizards, who currently hold the worst record in the NBA, it’s still an encouraging sign for the Mavericks. Thompson’s ability to catch fire and change the complexion of a game is a valuable weapon, especially as the team looks ahead to potential playoff matchups.

Daniel Gafford also had a strong showing, particularly on the defensive end. With several of the Mavericks’ big men sidelined due to injury, Gafford stepped up with 18 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 blocks. His energy and effort were crucial in containing Wizards center Jonas Valančiūnas, who tried to establish himself early but was largely neutralized by Gafford’s presence.

The blowout nature of the game allowed the Mavericks to rest some of their key players, including Kyrie Irving, who only needed to play 28 minutes. This kind of game management could prove valuable down the stretch of the season as the team jockeys for playoff positioning.
