Should the Mavs Trade for a Third Star?

The Phoenix Suns’ recent trade has sparked discussions about roster construction and the pursuit of a “big three” in the NBA. As the Suns mortgage some of their future to potentially acquire Jimmy Butler, it raises questions about whether the Dallas Mavericks should follow a similar path.

The concept of a “big three” has been less prevalent in recent years due to salary cap constraints. However, with Phoenix potentially forming a trio of Devin Booker, Kevin Durant, and Jimmy Butler, and Milwaukee possibly assembling their own with Giannis Antetokounmpo, Damian Lillard, and Bradley Beal, the strategy seems to be making a comeback.

For the Mavericks, the question becomes whether they should pursue a third star to complement Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. It’s a complex decision that depends largely on the available players and the team’s long-term vision.

Potential Third Star Options

Looking at the league’s highest-paid players, it’s challenging to identify realistic targets for the Mavericks. Joel Embiid’s name comes up as a possibility, but his injury history and the potential cost (likely including Dereck Lively) make it a risky proposition. Other stars like Kevin Durant, Kawhi Leonard, and Paul George seem firmly entrenched with their current teams.

The Draft Pick Dilemma

The Mavericks own their 2031 first-round pick, a valuable asset that could be used in trades. Phoenix recently traded their 2031 pick to Utah for multiple earlier picks, a strategy that could potentially help them acquire Butler. Dallas must weigh the value of this future asset against immediate roster improvements.

The Current Roster vs. Big Three

There’s a strong argument for the Mavericks to maintain their current roster construction. With a solid supporting cast around Doncic and Irving, the team has shown promise when healthy. The NBA’s current landscape might favor a strategy of securing a star duo and spreading resources across the rest of the roster rather than consolidating for a third star.
