The Sacramento Kings closed out their grueling six-game road trip with a hard-fought 116-114 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves. This win marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Kings, coming on the heels of the De’Aaron Fox trade that sent shockwaves through the organization.

Keegan Murray set the tone early, exploding for 17 points in the first quarter. His aggressive play and willingness to attack the basket showcased a newfound confidence in his role. While Murray’s production tapered off after the opening frame, his early outburst provided the spark the Kings needed.

Malik Monk has officially been handed the keys to the Kings’ offense. With Fox’s departure, Monk stepped up as the primary facilitator, finishing with 26 points and 5 assists. His chemistry with Domantas Sabonis in the pick-and-roll game was evident throughout the night, forming the foundation of Sacramento’s half-court offense.

DeMar DeRozan proved why he’s still one of the most clutch players in the league. The veteran forward took control in the fourth quarter, scoring 9 points and making crucial plays down the stretch. His ability to get to his spots and knock down tough shots in crunch time was the difference-maker in this close contest.

The Kings’ half-court offense looked more cohesive and fluid without Fox. While it’s a small sample size, the ball movement and player spacing seemed to improve. The two-man game between Monk and Sabonis appears to be the focal point moving forward, with DeRozan’s isolation scoring providing a safety net when needed.

Defensively, Keon Ellis and Trey Lyles emerged as potential difference-makers off the bench. The duo combined for five steals and four blocks, providing the kind of defensive energy and playmaking the Kings have sorely lacked. If they can consistently bring this level of intensity, it could go a long way in masking some of the team’s defensive shortcomings.

As the Kings return home to face the Orlando Magic, all eyes will be on Zach LaVine’s expected debut. The addition of LaVine’s three-level scoring ability should open up even more opportunities for this evolving offense.
