The NBA trade deadline is fast approaching, and one name that’s been swirling in the rumor mill is Brooklyn Nets forward Cam Johnson. As a Cavs insider, I’ve heard from multiple sources that Cleveland has genuine interest in acquiring Johnson. But the question remains: can they pull off a deal?
Johnson would be an ideal fit for the Cavs’ roster, providing much-needed three-point shooting and versatility. However, making a trade work isn’t as simple as identifying a good fit on paper. There’s always a human element to consider, and disrupting team chemistry can be risky, especially for a squad with championship aspirations.
The Cavs currently boast the best record in the NBA at 36-6, solidifying their status as title contenders. Historically, championship teams rarely make significant mid-season trades. Looking at the past decade of NBA champions, only two made impactful deadline moves: the 2021 Bucks acquiring P.J. Tucker and the 2019 Raptors trading for Marc Gasol.
The Nets’ Asking Price
Brooklyn’s reported asking price for Johnson is steep: two first-round picks. This presents a significant challenge for the Cavs, who sent most of their draft capital to Utah in the Donovan Mitchell trade. Cleveland can only offer their 2030 first-round pick, which would have to be unprotected.
The Cavs might need to get creative to stay in the running. One potential scenario involves packaging their 2030 first-round pick with a promising young player like Jaylon Tyson, the 20th overall pick in last year’s draft. However, it’s unclear if the Nets would view this as equivalent value to two first-rounders.
Competition from Other Suitors
The Oklahoma City Thunder loom as a major threat to land Johnson. With their treasure trove of draft picks, OKC could easily outbid most teams if they decide Johnson is their guy. The Thunder’s ability to offer multiple first-round selections might ultimately price the Cavs out of contention.
